the battle of bloody marsh was a pivotal event in the history of georgia. thanks to general oglethorpe's efforts, spain gave up on the idea of invading georgia (yay). no two historians agree on exactly what happened, but most accounts agree that oglethorpe's victory involved equal parts cunning and courage (and pure luck probably didn't hurt much either).
don manuel de montiano
felt his future
looked very bright
he'd captured fort st. simons
and without a fight
oglethorpe's men had disappeared
by morning's light

the spanish soldiers
from st. augustine
were happy to believe
their battle won
in truth, the day was not yet done

montiano sent his troops north
through thick marshes
their path did wind
oglethorpe's trap was working
just as he'd designed
at gully hole creek
his courage
would soon be defined

highlanders, rangers
and marines
chicasaw, yamacraw
and the creek
together, spanish blood they'd seek

the time to spring his trap had come
oglethorpe held his sword high
charging on his horse
he gave his battle cry
warning the invaders
to prepare to die

highlanders, rangers
and marines
chicasaw, yamacraw
and the creek
together, spanish blood they'd seek

oglethorpe knew montiano
would not take long to retaliate
montiano never thought to hesitate
but the battle of bloody marsh
would finally seal his fate
